Surprisingly Good Holiday Movie of the Week

The Holiday.

A real scriptwriter's script, witty and risky (don't worry--it does work out in the end as all good romantic comedies do) and very demanding on the two leading ladies, who spend a lot of time on screen alone. Far better than its previews led me to believe.

Is this the one with Cameron Diaz and Jack Black?

Eh, I agree it's not as bad as the trailer would have one believe, but I believe your review is too generous. And that's without adjusting my review to account for American-culture craving while in Taiwan.

Uninteresting fact(s):

I have not been able to watch a movie with Cameron Diaz in it since "My Best Friend's Wedding," wherein Michael definitely marries the wrong woman. Yes, yes. Jules cheats, lies, and deserves to be called fungus, but I still wanted Michael to choose her.

and...

the only movie I have seen starring Jack Black is "School of Rock," which I kinda like if I'm in just the right mood.

I found some of the standard tropes a bit strange when I saw it (the fact that the couples had to be segregated somehow into the super hip ones and the slightly nerdy/less awesome ones in some sort of Shakespearean hierarchy was funny) but it did challenge some things in really interesting ways, and all in all was quite fantastic, enough that I asked for and got it for Christmas last year. But I'm also a sucker for good romantic comedies.
